Thunderbird 128.6.0esr (64 bit) can obtain access to my Google Calendar and Contacts but not to email. This is a clean installation on a brand new Windows 11 computer. I have reinstalled Thunderbird three times, deleted saved passwords, deleted only the SMTP and IMAP saved passwords (preserving OAuth2 passwords), deleted Thunderbird's access in Gmail security settings to force it to re-request access, followed every instruction on every forum and help page I can find, but Thunderbird refuses to send and receive mail. Thunderbird finds the correct configuration and sets it up (correct ports, IMAP, SMTP, correct servers, OAuth2, etc.) I used my Gmail address and the same password as I use for webmail.

I am presently using Outlook for Gmail because it connected immediately using the same credentials as I am trying with Thunderbird. When I delete access permission in Gmail security settings, then add Gmail to Thunderbird again, it prompts for access to Contacts and Calendar but not to mail (one time it flashed a screen saying it could not because Java is not enabled in my web browser--but Java is enabled on both my default browser, Edge, and on Chrome; the page that came up appears to be some internal browser in Thunderbird).

The attached images show the configurations for IMAP server, the SMTP server, and that the saved passwords contain two OAuth2 URLs, one for contacts and the other for the calendar, but nothing for mail.

I have been using Thunderbird for years, and have a massive archive of emails in it, would really like to use it as my email client rather than Outlook. Installation and configuration has never been this difficult. Does anybody have any thoughts on what to do next?

If I preview an email in the android gmail app, Thunderbird won't download the email. I guess it won't grab read mail from the server.

I would like when I delete mail via Thunderbird that it be deleted from the server. I do not delete them from my phone. I only preview.

Is there a setting in Thunderbird to allow read email to download or would it wreak havoc? My workaround is to mark emails unread from within the gmail app.

somewhere along the line I have screwed up Thunderbird on my Desktop computer. I am stuck with a spinning wheel and no recovery in any of my 5 accounts for the past year. I can receive all message on my Kindle Fire 10 so I am not out of business I need to know what steps I can use to halt the messages coming in on my Desktop Computer and not lose any of my messages. My action that seemed to cause my problem was try to do a mass marking of some 60,00 unread messages as read in my wife's primary account. Any ideas will be welcome. Thanks, Bo Edwards

I have had issues with thunderbird. I use it to email customer for my Mitchell 1 software. I have used it since 2017. I have had to uninstall it and reinstall it or update it a few times over the years. It would not work this week. So I was going to uninstall/reinstall it. It will not let me uninstall it. It gives me a error that it needs to reboot to update. I have click yes and no many times. It has restarted my pc but it still gives me the same message. I have also tried to install it and it will show me the same message.

Hello,

I received a new laptop with Ubuntu 24.04 and I'm trying to install Thunderbird. I have tried snap, flatpack, the downloaded package and nothing works. The only one that worked so far is https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2024/08/install-thunderbird-deb-not-snap-in-ubuntu-24-04 but this results in a different (?) thunderbird being installed, thunderbird-esr and there is no icon in the dock and I cannot pin it in the dock, which is a bit annoying. I saw there are other people having the same issue as me https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/cannot-install-thunderbird-because-it-is-not-allowed-by-dot-thunderbird-plug-rule/28878/13 https://askubuntu.com/questions/1538919/ubuntu-24-02-error-installing-thunderbird

The command `$sudo snap install thunderbird` gives the following error `error: cannot perform the following tasks: - Mount snap "thunderbird" (609) (installation not allowed by "dot-thunderbird" plug rule of interface "personal-files" for "thunderbird" snap)`

I also tried various commands offered in response to the questions linked above `$snap connections thunderbird` returns `error: snap "thunderbird" not found`

`$snap interfaces | grep personal` returns `119::personal-files firefox:dot-mozilla-firefox 'snap interfaces' is deprecated; use 'snap connections'.`

`$snap version` returns `snap 2.67 snapd 2.67 series 16 ubuntu 24.04 kernel 6.8.0-51-generic`

`$snap list --all thunderbird` returns `error: no matching snaps installed`

I also tried via the Ubuntu "App Center" and the Install button just keeps coming back. I expect it's running into the same error I have via the terminal and doesn't give any feedback in the graphic interface.

Please let me know what I must do to install Thunderbird via snap.

Thank you, Caroline

In my inbox view, I have the Events tab open at the right. All day events have the background colour of the appropriate calendar, but ones with timings have a dot. (see attached). How do I make ALL calendar events have the background colour of the associated calendar in the mail events tab??

I have just synced Thunderbird with my web email which worked fine. I then emptied my web email account as it was full. This is the methodilogy that I have been following with Thunderbird for the last 20+ years.

Thunderbird then re-synced with the now empty web email and deleted all of the emails that I had downloaded. I then checked the trash but it is empty. I have just lost around 1 years worth of emails.

Just for clarity the web email is an IMAP account.

Converting from Endora to Thunderbird - A "How To"

If you are finally ready to move from Eudora to Thunderbird, here are some tips from my experience today (a close relative had been notified that authentication would be required in the future, a feature not available in Endora.). Here are the steps I took:

  1. First, do NOT install a current release of Thunderbird. It doesn’t have the required conversion tool. The import tool is on an earlier version of Thunderbird, probably not available after release 31 or thereabouts. I used release 17.0.9 for this and it worked well. https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/17.0.9esr/win32/en-US/
  2. Eudora needs to be installed, and the import feature will do its thing. The import process will import the addressbook and all message folders. Although the messages were all captured, the addressbook import mangled content other than email addresses (such as phone numbers and postal addresses).
  3. Do NOT use the resulting profile, even though you may feel the work is done. It is not. This is because Thunderbird has evolved since that old release of 17.0.9 happened and much has changed. Instead , do this:
    • Exit thunderbird
    • Copy the ...appdata\thunderbird folder elsewhere for safekeeping (that folder is at c:\users\<yourid>\appdata\roaming\thunderbird.)
    • uninstall this old version of thunderbird and delete the default appdata\thunderbird folder
    • install the current release of thunderbird
    • set up the email accounts. If POP, do NOT enter password to ensure no messages download in the interim.
    • exit thunderbird and, using Windows File Explorer, copy ALL message folders and files from the 17.0.9 profile’s imapmail or mail folder to the new profile’s imapmail or mail folder as appropriate in same location within profile, e.g., Mail\<accountname>\<all message folders and files> - this is important only for POP, as IMAP mail will autopopulate.
    • click the Tools>import>Import from a file menu to import the MAB addressbook (abook.mab and history.mab) from the 17.0.9 profile. There will be errors to delete if the old addressbook including phone numbers or postal addresses, but otherwise it works.
  4. Now, do a backup for safety, exiting Thunderbird first.

I have used Thunderbird for awhile without any issues. I just had to switch to a different computer and am trying to get everything set up again. I have three emails accounts through Spectrum. I am able to receive emails but am unable to send them. All of the settings are correct. The problem seems to be that it keeps randomly changing the email addresses under Manage Identities. I have changed them back many, many times but they don't save. It keeps rotating among the three so when I try to send an email, I get this error message: An error occurred while sending email. The mail server responded: sender rejected. The email address you are sending out must match the email address you used to auth. Please check your SMTP settings. AUP#Out-1500. Please verify that your email address is correct in your account settings and try again. Because they randomly rotate around I can send an email occasionally when it just so happens to rotate back to the correct email address but the next time it has changed again to one of the others and I get the message above. Please help. Thanks.

Thunderbird just automatically updated (after initially being blocked by ThreatLocker, I don't think that had any consequence but I include it just in case). I went to forward a message and while the subject content was preserved, none of the message body or attachments were included - it was a blank email. I tried explicitly forwarding several messages, and it turned out one that had been previously forwarded did populate correctly. However any message that had not previously been forwarded came up blank except for subject. Forwarding using As Attachment did attach an email and populate the Subject. Not sure if something got broken in the new update...
